Myopia Can Be Prevented

June 8, 2010
Tags: ,

The quality of the myope’s life must not be very high, as they have do most of things by wearing a pair of glasses. Even with the help of contact lens nowadays, some trouble still can’t be avoided. No one wants himself to be myopic. Therefore, myopia prevention plays a more and more important role in the modern life. How to prevent myopia? Here, I will give you some advices.

1. Most myopia are caused by their bad habits such as reading when lying in bed, reading for too long time and watching at close distance. These bad habits must be paid attention to by everyone. The main point is not to make your eyes too tired. There are many things we should do to form good habits, such as reading with correct sitting posture, don’t stare at one thing for too long time, especially don’t stay in front of computer all the time. You’d better go out after one hour’s work and see far object, especially the greens. Sleeping is also of great help. You can completely relax your eyes after having adequate rests. So it is good to have a good habit and enjoy yourself.

2. Environment also influences your eyesight much. If you want to protect your eyes well, you must read under proper lighting, with right height of desks and chairs. Besides, whether the printing is clear or not also matters, letters which are too small are bad for eyes. Above all, you should choose a good environment to read.

3.The best sport for eyes is eye exercise. The main purpose is to make eyes relaxed adequately. The steps are simple, and we don’t introduce them specifically here.

4. Nutrition plays an important part on eye protecting. Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Vitamin E are good for eyes, and people are suggested to take every day. The liver of animals, milk, egg yolk, green vegetables and carrots all contains a lot of Vitamin. Thus having balanced diets do help. Meanwhile, don’t eat too much candy and high-fat foods, because they may cause or promote the degree of myopia.

5. Finally, you’d better go to hospital to examine your eyes every three to six months. Once you find your sight is down, you can take measures to prevent myopia in time.

When you find yourself all the things seems faint, you should go to your doctor to check your eyes accurately and get a proper glass. Otherwise, your eyesight would degenerate. Furthermore, check up your eyes regularly to make sure the glasses suit your well.

The Light Of The Body Is The Eye: LASIK Gives You Back the Natural Vision

June 6, 2010

It’s adieu to the irritation caused by the contact lenses or the cumbersome glasses which keep falling off your face in a busy crowd! Millions of individuals across the globe have adopted LASIK surgery to get back their natural vision.

LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis and is a refractive surgery procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea, the clear covering of the front of the eye (also known as the lens of the eye), using an excimer laser. During the procedure, computer-generated pulses vaporize a portion of the stroma, the middle-section of the cornea. The precise surgical process on the corneal tissue can cure any imperfections of the human eye, myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and/or astimagtism (an image distortion on the retina caused by faults in the cornea).

Photorefractive Keratectomy or PRK was the first surgical procedure using laser to fix imperfections of the human eye. Over the years, LASIK has gained popularity as the operating procedure of choice for ophthalmologists. The major difference between the two procedures revolves around how the laser is used to sculpt the eye. In PRK, the topmost layer of the cornea is scraped to operate on the stroma. In LASIK, laser is used to cause an incision in the stroma and reshape the corneal tissue. Since LASIK treats the inner tissue of the cornea, there is lesser area to heal, lower risk of scarring and corneal haze, lesser post-operative pain and normal vision is revived within a small time period.

The LASIK procedure has become more popular as an effective cosmetic surgery option to get rid of the cumbersome glasses or contact lenses. Vocational reasons, such as for professionals in various sports, army, navy or pilots, acting or modeling, have also increased the popularity of this refractive procedure. This procedure also relieves individuals who are allergic to using contact lenses, resulting in watering and redness of the eyes. The simple LASIK procedure enables you to walk-in and out within a couple of hours from the surgical centre. Patients can resume normal life within 2 to 3 days of the refractive surgery.

There are however certain caveats to be considered before you go for your LASIK procedure. It is a big NO-NO for you if you are under the age of 18. Consider discussing any additional risks with your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, suffering from diseases due to hormonal fluctuations, refractive instability and participate regularly in contact sports which cause regular blows to the face / eyes. Also, if you are on medications which might linger wound healing, such as immunodeficiency states (e.g., HIV), give it a second-thought by discussing with your physician. Make an informed decision before proceeding for LASIK, considering that a minimal percentage of patients have suffered from unforeseen complications after the surgery.

Dr. R.P. Centre for Opthalmic Sciences, AIIMS, New Delhi, was the first Government Institution in India to conduct excimer laser surgery in the country. Specialist LASIK surgery centres have sprouted in the major metros of the country, but the Laser Eye Surgery Centre located in Mumbai and Manipal Hospital, Bangalore, are some of the more renowned ones in the country. A newer technology has developed known as C-LASIK or customized LASIK, which provides a more precise way of treating the distortions in the eye giving the patient a much better quality of post-operative vision. India offers one of the best ophthalmic surgeons in the world at the cheapest prices. Since this is considered as a cosmetic surgery, most of the insurance companies in US do not reimburse the high costs of the surgery. It could cost up to Rs.2 lakhs in US, as compared to Rs.20,000 to Rs.30,000 in Delhi for the conventional LASIK procedure. Even the enhanced C-LASIK procedure will cost anywhere in the range of Rs.30,000 to Rs.36,000. The reduced costs have caused a huge influx of foreigners coming to India for the refractive surgery. With the availability of improved technologies and trained individuals, LASIK has offered the flexibility of leading an energetic, glass-free lifestyle. Let the world know you “With eyes that look’d into the very soul…Bright – and as black and burning as a coal”…

What Is Lasik?

June 2, 2010
Tags: ,

LASIK is an acronym referring to the medical procedure of Laser Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis, which is intended to correct the vision of those who depend on glasses or contact lenses for flawless vision. It is a refractive laser eye surgery performed by ophthalmologists and is considered an ideal alternative to PRK, or Photorefractive Keratectomy. Compared to PRK, a LASIK surgery requires lesser time for recovery including the overall experience being painless.

In LASIK surgery, the shape of the cornea is permanently changed using an excimer laser. A microkeratome (blade) is used for cutting a flap in the interior area of the cornea. One end of this flap is left with a hinge and is folded back to reveal the middle section of the cornea known as stroma. The flap is then replaced when the pulses of the computerized laser, vaporize a portion of the stroma. However, according to research, there may be other techniques and new terms that are related to LASIK surgery.

Dr. Jose Barraquer first found the technique of LASIK. He developed the microkeratome in 1960 for cutting the thin flap of the cornea. Dr. Lucio Buratto and Dr. Ioannis Pallikaris developed LASIK surgery in 1990. A LASIK surgery is performed with the patient being full awake and mobile, however, with a mild sedative and anesthetic eye drops. Pre-operative screenings and comprehensive tests detecting the suitability and possible aftereffects of the surgery are performed and considered one of the crucial steps prior to the surgery. Although performed with success and ease on a number of patients, according to research, there have been cases wherein patients have developed several complications after the surgery resulting in repeated procedures of enhancement.

The complications following a LASIK surgery might include night vision, double vision, glares and halos to name a few. Proper follow-up care programs are essential for some patients, without which the patient may need to continue with their glasses and contact lenses even after the surgery. It is highly recommended to find out whether the patient is eligible for a LASIK surgery and try out the alternative ways. LASIK is not recommended for people below 18 and pregnant women.

Laser Eye Surgery Cost – Some Visionary Foresight

May 31, 2010

The advent of modern technology has made it possible to correct our vision through corrective surgical procedures but the laser eye surgery cost does not come cheap. You will have to pay for the technological advancement and in most situations that optical insurance plan you have won’t cover the costs. For this reason we thought we would offer you some visionary foresight as to what to expect if you are considering laser eye surgery anytime soon. As with any surgical procedure unfortunately the price will vary depending on where in the world you are going to receive the procedure. It is important that you do your research before signing on any dotted line. You need to know the facts and ensure there are no hidden costs waiting to surprise you.

First of all, if you are considering eye corrective surgery; prior to worrying about the laser eye surgery cost, you need to consult your medical professional and determine what procedure will be best for you and if your health will even allow it to be performed. There are certain requirements that have to be meant in order for a patient to qualify for the procedure. There are various surgical procedures that can be performed to correct your vision problems. The three most common laser procedures are LASIK, PRK, and LASEK. However, there is an addition option that can be implemented even though it is not FDA approved and it is called RLE or Refractive Lens Exchange. In addition, there are advanced technology options even with the laser procedures.

Another factor that must be taken into consideration is that the price you will normally be quoted is for one eye only. You are not going to find many buy one get one deals here and if you do you should view it skeptically. In addition, corrective eye surgery can also be accomplished with a blade rather than a laser but we will focus on the laser costs only. Laser eye surgery cost has held fairly steady over the past year and a half. This is most likely due to the poor economics conditions. The average cost actually declined slightly from where it was 18 months ago in September 2008. Let’s look at three groups of laser procedures and what you can expect to pay for each:

1. LASIK, LASEK and PRK – Although LASIK is probably the most popular of these 3; the procedures are closely related. All 3 can be performed with a laser and the end result is the alteration of the cornea shape in order to refract light rays closer to the retina. The typical cost for this procedure using either one of these 3 methods will be around $2,140 per eye.

2. Wavefront -Guided LASIKThis advanced procedure allows for more precise eye correction procedures. By utilizing 3 dimensional measurements this procedure makes the process more accurate. The cost reflects the enhancement. The price per eye is $2,314.

3. Reflective Lens Exchange - Although not FDA approved this procedure is still applicable. This procedure basically constitutes removing your natural eye lens and replacing them with an artificial one. You can expect to dish out anywhere from $2,500 to $4,500 per eye for this procedure.

As you can clearly see; the laser eye surgery cost can be a little scary to say the least. The advice we offer is quite simple. Consult your medical professional and do your homework. Once you are approved for these procedures make sure you find a qualified, reputable surgeon to perform the operation. In addition, ensure that there are not hidden costs to worry about. Get all of your facts up front before you sign on the dotted line. In this case you want to rely on good foresight rather than hindsight after it is too late.

Dry Eye Drops For Dry Eyes

May 29, 2010

The human perceptive faculty, namely the eye is God’s gift to the world of living beings. It is the most essential organ, among the other four sense organs with the help of which, an individual can make sense of the world and his/her circumstances at large. But this faculty of sense perception faces difficulties and problems as well. Among the problems, dryness is something that causes obstruction and irritation in the path of visualization. In order to get relief from dry eye condition there are lots of antibiotic eye drops that does wonders to the problem. By this, what I mean is the prevalence of OTC in the market. These OTCs come handy in times of short term dry condition of the eyes. Short term, dryness of the eye occurs quite often due to heavy reading of print materials or sitting in front of the screen for large number of hours. These OTCs give relief to the eyes by restoring the required water content to the eyes.

There are various factors that cause the eyes to go dry. Change of weather condition, for instance, windy days or extremely sunny days are instances when one can face acute dryness of eyes. Similarly, traveling in a plane can cause dryness of the eyes as the air within the plane has an extreme lack of moisture. Drinking less amount of water can cause dehydration which in turn can cause the eyes to go dry. Hence, apart from these there are other factors as well that might cause the eyes to go dry causing uncomfortability. However, it is advisable to go to a doctor prior to going to a chemist shop with the intention of purchasing a drop for getting relief from the dryness. This is because many antibiotic eye drops consist of liquids or preservatives that encourage the growth of bacteria. There are people who are sensitive or allergic to these chemicals used in the drops. In fact, there are instances when the use of dry eye drops can cause irritation in the eye along with redness. The eyes might get even drier, in case of worst reactions.

Hence, it is observed that doctors and chemists always prescribe dry eye drops that are devoid of any chemical preservatives. The problem with dry drops containing preservatives is that once they are opened, they must be necessarily discarded within a restricted time period as otherwise there will be bacterial growth in the eye drops causing more trouble to the users. However, using eye drops that does not contain a decongestent is preferable than those containing one. But the problem with the dry eye drops not containing a decongestant is their time period. But still it is advisable to use that. Antibiotic eye drops containing decongestant can also make the eyes go drier after its application.

The primary duty of the user suffering from the problem of dry eyes is to make sure the sensitivity quotient of his/her eyes. If the eyes are sensitive, then antibiotic eye drops without the presence of any preservatives has to be used. In other case, decongested or antibiotics without the presence of a preservative should be used as they are better and safer. Therefore, dealing with a matter as sensitive as the eye must be handled with care and caution.

What is Astigmatism? – Better Ways to Correct Astigmatism

May 27, 2010

What is astigmatism?

Astigmatism is a medical term for a blurred vision that is caused by the irregular curve of the cornea. In this condition light rays will enter the eye not in the right focus on the retina, creating a blurred image. In simple words, astigmatism is an image distortion that is caused by improper shape of the cornea.

There are two types of astigmatism: corneal astigmatism that is caused by an irregular shape of the cornea and lenticular astigmatism which is caused by an irregular shape of the lens.

What causes astigmatism?

In corneal astigmatism, the light that comes into the cornea does not refract properly causing the retina receive an imperfect image. In lenticular astigmatism, the irregular shape of the lenses is responsible for the imperfect images that reach the back of the eye (retina).

What are the symptoms of astigmatism?

The most common symptoms of astigmatism are blurred or distorted image at short or long distance, sensitivity to light, headaches, eye squints (as an attempt to see an object more clearly), eye strain (when eye is forced to focus for a long period).

How astigmatism is diagnosed?

Your ophthalmologist or optometrist may use the following tools to examine your vision with:

* Visual test which involves reading letters on a chart. Optician may suspect that you have astigmatism if you see the letters become progressively smaller on each line.

* Astigmatic dial chart which shows a series of semi-circle lines. People with astigmatism will not see the lines equally clear.

* Ophthalmometer, an instrument for measuring the reflection of an image on the surface of the cornea and other capacities of the eye, to determine the degree of astigmatism.

* Keratoscope (Placido’s disk) : an ophthalmic instrument to assess the shape the anterior surface of the cornea. If a patient is suffering from astigmatism, the reflection of a series of concentric rings that are projected onto the cornea are seen distorted.

What are the treatments for astigmatism ?

Corrective lenses

Corrective eye glasses or contact lenses are used to bend the coming light rays to correct the faulty refraction so that the images will be received properly by the retina. However, corrective lenses cannot cure astigmatism. People who wear glasses or contacts often need stronger prescriptions year after year.

Laser eye surgery (PRK, LASEK or LASIK)

In eye surgery, the doctor will remove cornea and make it into a proper shape, then he will put the cornea back into the eye. Patients may feel pain and discomfort for a certain of period and need sometime for the eye to recover and won’t be stabilize for over a month. One thing that you have to consider: eye surgery is expensive and can cause scar tissue that is not guaranteed will disappear. Scar tissue usually will be less flexible than normal tissue, leaving it to become disable to adjust to different circumstances.

Considering the above, now we come to a question: is there any other option to correct astigmatism?

The answer is, you still have a chance to correct astigmatism and have the flexibility of your eye muscles. When your relieve rigidity in and around your eyes, the lens and muscles, the components of your eye will work in harmony to create better clarity. Allowing the eye to try to repair itself is certainly a preferable option.

Through eye exercises and therapy, you will learn to develop visual skills you need to correct astigmatism.

* Vision therapy and eye exercise are very beneficial to treat astigmatism as well as other eyesight conditions such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and presbyopia (old-age blur) without the use of eye glasses / contact lenses or eye surgery. This method is designed to re-educates the eyes and mind about the habits of seeing clearly and naturally. The program includes eye exercises, eye relaxing therapy, far and near training eye-charts that are easy to follow. Many have claimed that this method is effective to improve their vision in a safe and inexpensive way.

Get the Most From Your Cheap Contact Lenses

May 24, 2010

There was a time when contact lenses were premium products prescribed only by medical specialists. People would shy away from using them thinking they were painful. Today, with research and development, one can easily pick up cheap contact lenses over the counter without batting an eyelid and without even having to visit an optician.

Contacts, as they are also known, help people immensely in their daily lives by freeing them of the awkwardness of wearing spectacles. In the reasonable category mainly soft lenses are available as semi soft and hard ones still require testing and prescription from a specialist. Most of the over the counter lenses are mass produced, user friendly, pre-numbered lenses that are gas permeable.

They also come in plenty of colors for people looking at cosmetic usage. They are affordable because that is part of their user-friendliness. Cheap need not mean that they lack in quality; in fact, most reputed companies have entered this market as it targets a mass variety of consumers.

Since they come in various pre-prepared numbers, you should know which number would suit your use best. The numbers are not precise to your requirement and you would have to settle for one closest to yours. That is okay as the difference would not be too much.

You can get your eyes checked at any optician or even your eye doctor. Of course, you do not need a prescription to purchase these types of lenses. If you already wear glasses, they could be used as a sample of what number you would need.

For sure, there would have to be clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) besides any other medical association. Avoid lenses that are not certified. They could bring harm to your eyes which could lead to complications.

These custom made lenses, ones that existed before the innovation of mass produced, pre-numbered lenses, cost substantially more as they are medically created. These have a capacity to last for at least a year, that is if you take care of them as advised by the doctor.

There are all types of cheap contact lenses. Plain, single colored, dual toned, 6 month lasting and even daily lasting ones. If you go in for the daily disposables, they will usually come in a 6 month supply pack. These are generally really very easy to use and completely tension free. You do not need to worry about maintaining them; just put them on in the morning and throw them at night! These are the ones that fly off the shelf more than any of the other varieties. Yet of course, you cannot mistreat them and then wear them as they are liable to catch bacteria or some dust which could affect your eyes.

Understanding LASIK

May 22, 2010

Lasik eye surgery – one of the most popular elective procedures are carried out – to continue to grow in popularity proceedings today, and more people choose to go more because their glasses and contact lenses in dust and embrace a clear vision through advanced surgical.

LASIK is one that was beginning in a series of technological innovations since 1940 is its late, but do not meet, the process that we know today until 1990. The> LASIK procedure, as we know it today was the first time in 1991 in the United States a.

Lasik stands for Laser Assisted In-Situ keratomileusis themselves and for years is a combination of some of the technologies developed in all. This is essentially Lasik refractive eye surgery that bend or corrections are made to the way our eyes break – - light.

In a normal eye function, the light is received through the lens of the eye – is the segmentbehind the colored part – and the iris – the eye. Once the lens receives light will break or bend on the retina of the eye – found in the group of cells along the back of the eye. From there, the retina converts light signals into a message that they supply to the optic nerve in our brain. The optic nerve receives these signals as a visual image or picture.

By heredity, illness, injury, or aging of our eyes can difficulty of refraction in terms of experienceMyopia, hyperopia and astigmatism, among other conditions. When this happens the light is not refracted properly, and finally the message or signal that the nerve receives resulted in a blurred image.

During LASIK surgeons use laser technology to resurface the cornea – the transparent covering of the eye – the way sharper and cleaner light refraction. The LASIK procedure should always start with the right choicea surgical center on extensive research. The surgeon, the procedure is performed, is usually one or two preoperative visits during which a particular candidate for the procedure and start the general health assessed.

The procedure begins with numbness Lasik eye with the use of eye drops. Once the eye is numbed, the patient is asked to lie on his back and the eye itself, with an open funnel which is in first place and locationlower eyelids. The eye is then immobilized with the use of a corneal suction ring. Once the eye of the surgeon makes a cut tiny immobilized in the top layer of the cornea to create a flap.

The flap is then shown that the central cornea bent – known as the stroma. The surgeon then low-power laser technology used for the stroma, after which the flap is replaced on the surface of the eye again. The same procedure takes almost no time – usually no more than 10Minutes per eye.

The healing begins immediately and occurs naturally. Most patients report little or no discomfort during the LASIK procedure and only minor inconvenience as a result of IT – usually resolves within 24 hours after the operation.

How to Choose the Right Sunglasses For You

May 20, 2010

The website, Accu-Weather helps you test the index map of ultraviolet rays in your area. A good pair of sunglasses should be able to block a hundred percent of these UV rays and must also absorb the high energy visible rays.

A lot of sunglasses take in ultraviolet saturation to a certain level. Roughly 88% of UV light can be absorbed by CR-39R plastic lenses.

Polycarbonate sunglasses can take in 100%. Non-prescription polarized shades which are normally sold in optical shops take in 100% UV; however they command a higher price. Triacetate which can be found in cheaper sunglasses can only take in 40% UV rays.

Acrylic materials are used for cheaper lenses and can offer partial to full absorbent protection. If you want to be assured of getting UV protection for a hundred percent, buy sunglasses from stores with good reputation.

Your perception of color saturation and brightness can be altered by some sunglasses. A natural density gray colored lens will repeatedly make the colors dark without altering the color perception. The G-15 tint is a combination of green and gray and is exceedingly recommended. This tint is being used by Bausch & Lomb, a known lens manufacturer, for their Ray-Ban sunglasses and is specially designed for pilots.

To sharpen foggy day settings into sharper points, choose the brown polarized lenses as a warm glow is being given off by the brown tint. Polarized lenses outline the light from the flat meridian allowing the light from the upright meridian. They also block the light that reflects and thereby reduces glare. These lenses are a good choice for people who spend a lot of time outdoors. You can always have your sunglasses check by an eye care specialist and any optical stores to check whether your sunglasses are giving you the right protection.

Wearing big hats while doing your daily outside routine like gardening is sure way of blocking the sun out. Nevertheless, wearing shades that give you 100% protection from the UV rays of the sun will give you additional protection.

Sunglasses need not be expensive. They should be able to perform the task assigned to them, which is blocking the UV rays and giving the wearer 100% protection. Not only designer sunglasses have the capacity to fully block the UV rays. In fact, you can find or buy good quality sunglass chips to fit your frames and you get exactly what you need.

Wearing sunglasses is a MUST when being exposed to outdoor light. Make it a habit of yours especially when you are out in the sun. You are doing your eyes a good favor in doing so.

Cataract Laser Surgery

May 18, 2010
Tags: ,

What are cataracts? Cataracts affects the lens of the eye causing clouding of the vision. Once cataracts have set in, light is scattered or is fully or partially blocked out. This clouding impairs the vision of the person with cataract.

Though cataracts are an abnormality in vision, it is a normal occurrence in aging. More than 90% persons older than 75 years old have cataract. Most of the time, cataracts affects both eyes but one eye is more affected than the other.

Cataract symptoms may be minimal so that persons affected may not even be aware of it. However, severe cataracts cannot see good enough to function normally in their daily lives.

How do you know if you have cataracts?

One of the telltale signs that you are starting to be affected by cataracts is having foggy, fuzzy, cloudy or filmy vision. There may also be changes in color vision. Night driving becomes difficult because headlights seem glaring, as do lamps and sunshine. Double vision also becomes a problem.

How can cataracts be treated?

The most common way is to change glasses with magnifying lenses and stronger bifocals. But if this method is not enough, surgery maybe required. The treatment will be undergone by removing the eye lens and replacing it with artificial lenses known as implant.

Cataracts can also be removed through surgery and your physician will explain the different options of surgery and how you can prepare yourself.

Laser surgery is one way of removing cataracts. Laser surgery for cataract is still experimentally tested. It utilizes light instead of ultrasound in dissolving cataract. LASEK and LASIK processes fall in laser surgery category.

In LASEK or laser epithelial keratomileusis, the cornea’s surface layer will be treated with alcohol and peeled back to reshape the layer underneath. The process prevents complications associated with cataract.

In LASIK or laser in situ keratomileusis, the surface layer of cornea is scoured away. This is done to reshape the underlying cornea surface. LASIK began in the mid-nineties and has largely replaced the old process of PRK or photorefractive keratectomy since then. With LASIK, a flap is created on top layer of the cornea to allow access to underlying surface of cornea. LASIK prevents most problems of postoperative pain, slow rehabilitation and corneal haze which are seen in the traditional PRK.

Both LASEK and LASIK procedures are effective, predictable and safe for also treating low to moderate near sightedness or myopia. Cataract laser surgery is not performed in the doctor’s clinic because it still needs surgical incision requiring an opening in the eyes.

It will take some weeks to completely heal an eye which undergone the laser surgery. It is advised for patients who have cataracts in both eyes to let one eye heal first before treating the other eye.

Undergoing cataract laser surgery treatment gives benefits as it improves your everyday activities, self confidence, work and safety. Consult your doctor about the available cataract laser surgery treatments available to you.
